Biography

Dr. Iakovidis received his MSc on Cybernetics, and PhD on Informatics from the University of Athens, Greece, in 2001 and 2004 respectively. Since then, he has gained significant experience from several research projects on intelligent systems for signal/image analysis, big data mining, prediction and uncertainty-aware modelling from both structured and unstructured data collections. He has proposed several artificial intelligence (AI) –enabled applications in biomedicine and other domains. From 2004 to 2010 he has served as Adjunct Lecturer/Professor in the University of Athens, and in the University of Central Greece. Between 2010-2014 Dr. Iakovidis was with the Department of Computer Engineering of the Technological Educational Institute of Central Greece (University of Applied Sciences), in Assistant and Associate Professor positions, he served as Head of the Department, and acted as Vice Rector of that Institute. In 2015 he was elected in the position of Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics of The University of Thessaly, and since 2021 he holds a Full Professor position at the same department. Dr. Iakovidis has also participated in various research projects. He was scientifically responsible for the Greek participation in FP7 ICT project DEBUGIT (2008-2012), where he contributed in the development of a medical decision support system based on multimodal data; and associate partner institute representative in the FP7 ICT project AVICENNA (2013-2015). Today he is a coordinator of the 1M€ National project ENORASIS (2018-2021) aiming to the development of novel cloud-based computer vision solutions for the blind and citizens with other disabilities. Overall, Dr. Iakovidis has co-authored over 150 journal, conference papers, and book chapters. He has participated in the development of several research proposals and research roadmaps, including the VPH-FET, the Digital Patient (DISCIPULUS project), and the Roadmap for In Silico Clinical Trials (AVICENNA project). He is Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, and Editorial Board Member of Measurement Science & Technology journals. He has acted as a Reviewer of several (>40) international scientific journals, as Evaluator of National research proposals (Greece, Cyprus, Belgium, Poland, Singapore), and as a Vice Chair and Evaluator of European research projects. He is a Senior Member of IEEE (societies SPS, CIS, EMBS), and member of IAPR, EUCOG and the Virtual Physiological Human Institute (VPHI).

The aim of ENORASI project is the development of a novel wearable system offering accessibility and guidance to open environments of high cultural and tourist value, while it provides a unique user experience, including users with limited sight or total blindness. The system will enable the user’s localisation in an area of interest, recognition of his/her environment, objects of cultural/tourist interest, obstacles or dangerous situations around. It provides directions not only for navigation but also for personalised guided touring. The proposed system integrates computer vision and voice-based interaction within a cloud information processing and sharing environment. Dr. Iakovidis' contributions include:

DebugIT

DEBUGIT (IP): Detecting And Eliminating Bacteria Using Information Technologies; Co-funded by the European Union, FP7 ICT; Period 2008-2012; Budget: E 9.398.033

The DebugIT System ("Detecting and Eliminating Bacteria Using Information Technology") is used to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance in European hospitals. Clinical data from 7 different locations are made available and compareable via data warehousing and semantic web technologies which integrate access and semantics uniformly. The formalized result data sets are amenable for intelligent data mining approaches illustrating and analysing the differences in drug prescribtion practices and their effects on the spread of antibiotics resistance. DebugIT implements an interoperability platform using communication standards such as ontologies and SPARQL data content exchange and processing. The system follows a linked data approach. Dr. Iakovidis' contributions include:

METAON: Ontology Driven Construction and Management of Meta-Data for Intelligent Search in Text and Image Collections; Co-funded by the General Secretary of Research and Technology of Greece and the European Union; Period 2006-2008; Budget: E 596.610.

The core objective of MetaOn is to construct and integrate semantically rich metadata collections extracted from documents images and linguistic resources, to facilitate intelligent search and analysis. The MetaOn framework involves, ontology-based information extraction and data mining, semi-automatic construction of domain specific ontologies, content-based image indexing and retrieval, and metadata management.
